Latvian soprano Annija Adamsone,
born in September 1997, began her operatic journey at the age of ten, when she appeared as the First Boy in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Latvian National Opera. This summer, she returns to the same work in a defining new role - making her debut as the Queen of the Night in a fully staged production at the Sigulda Opera Festival.
In the 2025/2026 season, Adamsone will perform Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Gürzenich Orchestra both at the Rheingau Music Festival and in the Cologne Philharmonie. She will also sing the soprano solo in the same work at the Isarphilharmonie in Munich with the Munich Symphony Orchestra. At the Latvian National Opera, Annija will appear as Mater Gloriosa in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tarmo Peltokoski; she will also return to the role of Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann in the same production as in the previous season. In South Korea, Adamsone will present a shared song recital. As part of the Tage Alter Musik in Herne, she will perform Salieri’s La Grotta di Trofonio with the Hofkapelle München; a further collaboration will follow with Mozart’s Der Stein der Weisen at the Theater an der Wien. At the Liederhalle Stuttgart, Annija will appear in Mendelssohn’s Paulus. In 2026 Adamsone will perform two world premieres with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra. At the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, she is set to sing the role of Marzelline in a concert performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio. Looking ahead, upcoming engagements include appearances with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the Internationale Bachakademie, and the Gaechinger Cantorey - among many other exciting and beautiful concerts to come.
In September 2024, Adamsone made her debut at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, performing Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Symphoniker Hamburg, the Symphonischer Chor Hamburg, and conductor Matthias Janz. That same month, she made her role debut as Olympia in a new production of The Tales of Hoffmann at the Latvian National Opera (musical director: Frédéric Chaslin; stage director: Aik Karapetian).
In the season 2024/2025, Adamsone also performed at Theater Trier, singing the roles of Adele (Die Fledermaus), Despina (Così fan tutte), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos) und Adina (L’elisir d’amore)
Adamsone has appeared as a soloist at Konzerthaus Berlin, performing the world premiere of Spārni, lielums un spēks by Jančevskis with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Berliner Singakademie and Riga Chamber Choir Ave Sol (2018).
As a versatile artist, Annija has been active in opera, oratorio, early music, chamber music and contemporary music.
In 2023, she sang Carmina Burana and Brahms' Requiem at Stuttgart's Beethoven Hall / Liederhalle, Fauré's Requiem (in the production Remember me) at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, and Dvořák's Stabat Mater at Saint-Michel's Church in Luxembourg. The same year, Annija made her role debut as Soeur Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites and performed a challenging soprano part in the world premiere of Cheng's opera Hans und Grete at Wilhelma Theater Stuttgart.
In 2022, Adamsone portrayed Belinda in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell and Diane in Actéon by Charpentier in concert performances at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart. In the same year, she also performed the role of Walter in Catalani's La Wally (new production, Wilhelma Theater Stuttgart). In 2021, she sang Gilda in excerpts from Rigoletto at the Latvian Academy of Music.
As a concert and oratorio soloist, Adamsone has performed soprano parts in Magnificat and Christmas Oratorio by Bach, Requiem, Great Mass in C minor and Exsultate, jubilate by Mozart, Stabat Mater by Pergolese, Stabat Mater by Schubert, Stabat Mater by Dvořák, Carmina Burana by Orff, Rejoice in the Lamb by Britten etc.
In 2024, Annija received the Grand Music Award (Lielā Mūzikas balva) - Latvia’s highest state recognition in music - in the category "New Artist of the Year," as well as the Audience Appreciation Award. In 2025, she was honored with the Baltic Award and the Pauls Sakss Award. She has been nominated for the national theatre award "Spēlmaņu nakts" as “Young Artist of the Year” and for the Latvian Public Media Annual Award "Kilograms kultūras 2024". Adamsone is also the Resident Artist of Latvian Radio 3 “Klasika” for 2025.
She is a laureate of several competitions: Inese Galante International Competition (2021, 2019), Alfreds Kalniņš Vocal Competition (2015) and International Competition Riga Symphony (2014). In 2020, she received the Peteris Plakidis Chamber Music Prize, and in 2021 and 2022 - a DAAD scholarship.
Adamsone began her musical education in Riga, graduating from the Riga Cathedral Choir School in 2017. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music under Prof. Antra Jankava. During the 2019/2020 academic year, she studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (HMDK) as an Erasmus student in the class of Prof. Ulrike Sonntag. She later completed her Master’s degree in Opera at the same institution, continuing her vocal studies with Prof. Sonntag.
Throughout her academic years, Adamsone participated in masterclasses with renowned artists and pedagogues, including Nelly Miricioiu, Raúl Giménez, Giuliano Carella, Margreet Honig, Claudia Friedlander, Alice Coote, Joy Mammen, and Matthias Klink, as well as early music specialists Thomas Leininger and Lisandro Abadie.
She also has extensive experience as a professional ensemble singer. From 2016 to 2019, she was a soloist with the Riga Chamber Choir Ave Sol. In 2017, she performed in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with Gustavo Dudamel, as a soprano in the EuropaChorAkademie.
